31 Days of Halloween Day #3

So we live in weird times, right? Toilet paper hoarding, a modern-day pandemic, illness. I know I have had my own fair share of medical intervention in the last few years.

Well, what I am about to let ya know, should make you pretty happy we have modern medicine in handy little pills and medicine bottles.

Diving today into the factual, “ethical”, but mildly gruesome world of Healing the Body.

As recently as the 20th century, When it came to medicine, The question was still not “Should you eat human flesh?” but, “What sort of flesh should you eat?”

Skull was one common ingredient, taken in powdered form to cure head and heart ailments, one of the first styles was powdered skull mixed with Spanish Chocolate to aid in blood pressure or apoplexy, sometimes mixed with fresh mint for the perfect Hot Chocolate drink.

Human marrow and bone were used for physical ailments especially a bad cough, Created as a mainstay in England this was called “Kings Drops” (named by King Charles II of England) which was ground bone mixed with alcohol formed into a tincture or drops.

Human fat was used to treat the outside of the body. German doctors, for instance, prescribed bandages soaked in it for wounds, and rubbing fat into the skin was considered a remedy for gout and physical pains. What was also common was to form into candles to aid in a sickbed treatment

Blood. Swiss physicians believed blood was good for drinking, and even suggested taking blood from a living body. While that doesn’t seem to have been common practice, the poor, who couldn’t always afford the processed compounds sold in apothecaries, could gain the benefits of cannibal medicine by standing by at executions, paying a small amount for a cup of the still-warm blood of the condemned.

Skin. Was a prize to Egyptian healers, but this one was tricky, as it was all about timing. Fresh corpse skin was great for jaw disorders & sleep issues. Give it a few weeks post-mortem and could be used as a” jerky” for tooth decay and cleaning. **Will note that it was never consumed or swallowed as cannibalism has never been socially acceptable. Just a fun bubblegum version.

Did you know? We have come to a fair distance but still, to this day bones, fat, and skin play an important role in common everyday colds. Flu, and OTC medications. Just a tad more palatable known as gelatin, stearic acid, Glycerin, and Conjugated estrogens (which by the way is horse urine)
