Pumpkins!!! Jack O'Lanterns, Stingy Jacks.

Did you know that pumpkins were orginally made from potatoes and squashes. The orginal tale involved a man Jack making a bet with the devil, that they could get Ale for the whole night if he was to to turn himself into a coin to buy drinks. He was a poor man of little means but his mind, he was known as Stingy for his frugal ways. A gold coin would by plenty of ale!! He fooled the devil to change to a coin and won the bet and drank himself to sleep in the night. However before toasting and drinking all night, He made the deal the devil could not claim him should he pass away and would release him from the trickery. The devil agreed.

Next year he beat the devil again bit tricking him to climb up a tree to gather fruit, to feed them both for a lifetime...and trapped the devil up the tree by carving a sympbol of a Cross into the bark the Devil could not pass. He forced the Devil to collect fruit till his belly was full and he fell asleep fat and happy in the dark night. Again winning with trickery and again the deal was made that should Jack pass away the Devil could not claim his soul. Upon agreeing the, the Devil was helped down the tree.

When Stingy Jack passed away, he was met at the gates of heaven that didnt want such an unsavory fellow in Heaven and he was sent to the Devil. Of course the Devil could not take him either as promised, and Didn't want someone so full of tricks and made him a fool, down below either.

So banished by both, Jack had nothing more than a lump of burning coal given to him by the Devil and was sent into the dark night to roam eternity. His payback for his trickery.

To keep his burning coal bright, Stingy Jack placed the coal inside a hollowed out turnip...and thus the story of how Jack's ghostly figure walks the deep dark nights, with nothing but the faint light of his lantern...he is Jack O'Lantern. Also a key to the Tricks and Treats part
