After a 100+ vials of blood being taken I was thinking about how famished I am and vampires…kind of. It brought someone to mind!
If you don’t know who Alberta Fish is. Let’s gooo. The Brooklyn Vampire.
Born in 1870, He was a traveling house painter from New York City with a myriad of deviant sexual fetishes and above all a hunger for hurting and eating children. I will attempt to be sensitive here but will point out none of his victims were over the age of 17.
In 1928, Albert Fish kidnapped, assaulted, and ate Gracie Budd, and it was actually her murder that led to his capture.
The young girl was a missing person case for 6 years. There had been no promising clues or developments regarding her disappearance from her Manhattan home. That is, until her mother Delia Flanagan Budd received an anonymous letter on November 10th, 1934.
“Dear Mrs. Budd,” it read. “On Sunday June the 3 — 1928 I called on you at 406 W. 15 St. Brought you pot cheese — strawberries. We had lunch. Grace sat in my lap and kissed my cheek. It was then made up my mind to eat her.”The bizarre, rambling letter that Mrs. Budd received on that cold winter evening began with the tale of a deckhand who developed a taste for human flesh and ended with a harrowing description of Mrs. Budd’s daughter being murdered — and roasted in the oven.I will actually omit most of the written letter details but it ended “....... cook, and eat it … It took me 9 days to eat her entire body.”Although the written confession was unsigned and nameless, it had been sent by the cannibalistic serial killer.
The police traced the letter back to where he was staying. With some very impressive detective skills for the time, which is actually fascinating even in today's standards.
After he was arrested, he claimed to have assaulted and committed crimes in every state, over 400 in total, targeting young people advertising for work in the newspaper, homeless children, and orphans. His guess was 400, but as the time of his trial only 3 could be solidly attached to him. He was also given names like the gray man, the boogey man and the Cannibal Killer.
The history of Fish, is truly twisted. Severe mental health issues, auditory hallucinations, Self harm, Auto erotica, hematophagia (drinking blood), omophagy (eating raw meat/flesh), Sadomasochistic rituals that I can’t begin to use words for and risk a facebook ban.
Before his trial, he was medically examined and x-rayed, and doctors found 29 needles and nails he had inserted into his stomach and groin and left inside himself, and the x-rays were used to prove his true depravity during the trial.
He was convicted of only the Budd murder, and sentenced to death. While in custody of the sing sing prison he was given the chance to write his confessions of crimes he committed. Before his execution, Albert Fish’s attorney Jack Dempsey refused to share his client’s notes. It only took one glance at them to determine that what Fish had described was too extreme and macabre for public consumption.
He wasn’t on death row for long, and he was executed by electric chair, 10 days later, on January 16, 1936.
Fish reportedly said to the guards taking him to the chair, “It will be the supreme thrill. The only one I haven’t tried.”
Truly shocking bites of crime
