They’re Heeeeerrre!
Does anyone else remember when you would wake up at the end of a broadcasting day? It was either the Canadian Anthem, the common colorful bars, and the monotone sound or it was the white static, and since kids are kids I know a few of you touched the screen to feel the fuzzy feeling from the electrostatic charge.
That's why this was used and very successful in the Poltergeist movie. Premiering in 1982, it was a cutting edge film with some of the most ahead-of-its-time effects and a break in the horror genre.
Did you know that the Movie and its sequels have some very dark secrets, in fact, the effect has legitimately been called the “Poltergeist Curse”
November 4th 1982, 22-year-old Dominique Dunne, who played Dana (the family's older daughter), was murdered. Dunne was strangled in her own driveway by her abusive ex-boyfriend and was removed from life support five days later.
September 14th 1985, Julian Beck, who starred as Kane (the Preacher) in Poltergeist II: The Other Side, died of stomach cancer at age 60., and he passed away months before the film even came out in theaters.
June 1987, Will Sampson, the actor who performed the exorcism as the Medicine Man, died of malnutrition and postoperative kidney failure at age 53. He was healthy prior to filming and was actually brought in originally due to his heritage and to do a ritual smudging and blessing of the filming locations.
While their deaths may not seem so unusual, some fans still believe they're connected to the curse, most notably the Iconic young star and perhaps the most convincing case, Heather O'Rourke, was incredibly young when she died of cardiac arrest and septic shock caused by a misdiagnosed intestinal issue. She died in February 1988 at 12, several months before the release of Poltergeist III, the final chapter in the original series.
Other members of the original cast also had horrible events happen. Richard Lawson was aboard USAir Flight 405 when it crashed into Flushing Bay in March 1992. A total of 27 people (out of the 51 onboard) were killed. Lawson survived but he was stated to say “even tho blessed to be alive, I felt like something dark has followed me for the last decade. I didn't know that was almost my final destination” (weird coincidence? Final Destination came out 8 years later)
More weird facts: The movie was based on a TRUE series of events, it drew inspiration from real-life events. The “Popper Poltergeist” plagued the Herrmann family in 1958. With actual police reports, and even an investigation from parapsychologist, J.B. Rhine of the Rhine Research Center. On February 3rd, 1958 in Seaford, New York Father, James Herrmann came home one day to his family telling him an extraordinary tale. Hermann’s wife, Lucille, said that after their children came home from school that day, they heard popping noises coming from different places around the house. When she and the kids investigated, they found several common household substances uncapped and placed upside down. The bottles were also hot to the touch. The substances included things like shampoo and bleach. What was even more disturbing was that a bottle of Holy Water had been spilled on the dresser.
Cue the demon music!
